Lakeview Elementary Community Council Meeting Minutes

October 4, 2021

In Attendance: Spencer Okey, Nancy Crocker, McKay Wallace, Catherine Fisher, Jordan Schmidt, Nate Shoell, Shane Robertson, Jenn Adams, and Sarah Christensen.

Excused: Susan Schreiner

  • Welcomed new members McKay Wallace and Jenn Adams.
  • Reviewed contact information for all community council members that is listed on the school’s webpage to verify that all information is correct.
  • Reviewed the rules of order and procedures that are listed on the school webpage as well. Also verified that the ratio of faculty to parents follows the bylaws set by the council.
  • Voted Susan Schreiner as the new secretary for the community council.
  • Voted Jordan Schmidt as the new Vice Chair for the community council.
  • Members viewed a video from Utah State Board of Education that talked about the updates and changes to completing and submitting yearly plans for budget allocations. This information included steps on how to write a successful proposal that would assist students in completing academic success in one of three major academic subjects.  The video also addressed information that is required to be posted on the school website to include: meeting schedule for the academic year, meeting minutes for a year, as well as information for parents on how to become involved in their school’s community council.  There was a form that was shown in the video that was supposed to be sent out to community council members that would allow them to sign up for or request training opportunities. We verified that none of the council members had received a link to said form. The video also discussed the timeline the council must follow on submitting their proposals for the next academic year.
  • Mr. Okey reviewed the plan for the 2021 – 2022 school year and gave updates on the progress that has been made. Goal #1 is for language arts. The school has implemented champion reading for grades K-3. This program allows for the teachers as well as multiple aides to spend dedicated time with each grade level on a certain day of the week. With the assistance of the additional aides they are able to break into small groups, no more than 6 student per group, and spend time working on language arts concepts. The size of each group is determined by the level of support the students need.  Goal #2 is for math. Students in grades K-5 are using Dreambox in the classroom to increase their math proficiency. Students in grade 6 are using Aleks in the classroom to improve their math proficiency. Students should also have access to those programs at home using their Weber School District email accounts.
  • The meeting schedule for the 2021 – 2022 academic year was discussed and will be as follows:

November 1st at 3:30 PM

January 10th at 3:30 PM

March 7th at 3:30 PM

May 2nd at 3:30 PM – *Date subject to change if necessary

  • The council talked about options for proposing certain projects at the school to include the playground area. It was discussed that those types of projects would be better funded through other avenues such as the PTA as they are not directly related to academics. We also discussed the fact that the school building is aging and there may be future bonds that would allow for the school to be rebuilt and it may not be very cost effective to replace certain items if that is something that may happen in the near future. Mr Okey also encouraged all council members to research the current bond that is being proposed this year that will be funding other schools in the Weber County School District.
  • Catherine Fisher and Mr. Okey will email reminders for the next meeting on November 1st.
  • The meeting was adjourned.
