Principal's Corner - August 24, 2016

Dear Parents, Students, and Faculty,
Welcome back to another school year at Lakeview Elementary. I hope you and your families had a great summer. I am excited to see the children and hear about their summer activities. We are going to have a great year of exciting learning and hard work. I believe in our students, teachers and staff. I know that working together we can reach our goals. We look forward to working with you and your children.
Please remember to put some money in your child’s lunch account. You can add money to the lunch account by visiting under the Departments tab then select Child Nutrition or you can send money with your child on the first day.

Here are a few things that will help us to have a great year:
* Utah State Law requires regular school attendance. To ensure that concepts and skills are consistently learned, regular school attendance is a must and we recommend that children not be allowed to stay home unless they are ill. Please call the school and let us know if your child will be absent. Also, punctuality is critical in order for children to feel a strong sense of belonging and to receive the directions and review that are given at the start of the day.
* Talk with your child about their day and what they are learning. Read with them daily and record their minutes in their planners or get online at and add their minutes on the Ken Garff Road to Success reading program. Establish a routine time and place to get their homework finished daily. Make sure they put it in their folder to bring back to school and turn it in.
* As a faculty and staff we will provide a safe learning environment that fosters active participation in learning which is crucial to each child’s education. It is expected that every child will behave in a manner that allows children the opportunity to learn to their maximum potential. This requires responsible behavior in class, on the playground, and walking to and from school. Please review Weber School District and Lakeview Policies and Procedures with your child. This note is to remind you of the procedures for coming into the school when the children are here.
During the school day when the children are in the school all exterior doors will be locked at all times and remain locked without exception. Signs are posted on all exterior doors reminding people to come through the front door on the south side of the building, sign in and get the proper tag to wear on your clothing where it can be visible at all times. If a parent or caregiver wants to go to the classroom or the portables for any reason they need to come through the front door and sign in.
The children who come for breakfast in the morning will need to enter through the front door and go into the cafeteria to eat. Breakfast starts at 7:55 and ends at 8:20. One of the lunch workers will come to the front doors to let the students in for breakfast at 7:55 a.m. When they are finished with breakfast they will go out the front door and down the sidewalk to the playground where they will line up with their classmates when the first bell rings at 8:25.

The teachers will go out and meet their students and take them through the doors closest to their classrooms. Those doors will be locked when the last class comes into the building. If your child is late they will need to go to the front door to go to class. If the student arrives at school after 8:30 they will need to come through the front doors and stop at the office to check in. If you are dropping your child off after 8:30 it would be great if you would park and walk into the building with them to sign in.

We want to provide a safe and happy environment for each child that attends school at Lakeview. We will be enforcing these procedures so we ask that each of you respect and comply with these procedures and talk with your child about following all of the rules and procedures that we have at Lakeview.

I have created a MyConnect account to be able to send/text a message to your family in the event of an emergency, or reminders to events that will be happening this school year. Please join this account by choosing one of the following methods below or watch for a note that will be sent home so you can receive a mass text with information that will be important throughout the year.

I have an open door policy at Lakeview and encourage parents to communicate often with the teachers and staff if questions or needs arise. I want to provide a safe school environment - please always sign in and get a visitor pass at the front office using the front doors. A parent’s sustained interest in their child’s academic and social experiences at school can be great motivation for learning. Let your child see and feel that we are working together in every way to make this a terrific school year.
I am looking forward to a great year with you and your children.
Thank you,
Mrs. Passey, Principal
